The collection includes eighty-nine letters written by Edward Jesup Wood to his wife while serving in the 48th Indiana Infantry Regiment. The letters include a detailed account of the seige of Vicksburg and other battles in Mississippi. The military records include material related to the 48th Indiana Infantry Regiment including quartermaster related records, ordnance records, an 1862 muster roll, and records of deceased soldiers' clothing. Also included are materials concerning Wood's appointments as Elkhart County Surveyor, court clerk, and judge.

Edward Jesup Wood (1834-1873) was born in Florida and raised by his maternal grandmother in Connecticut. He graduated from Dartmouth College, N.H., and moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he designed the Michigan, Southern & Northern Indiana Railroad between Toledo and Goshen, Indiana. He moved to Goshen in 1857 where he practiced law. Wood married Jane Williams (1835-1892) and the union bore two children.
